Moving can become very stressful, but there are ways you can reduce that stress to be more manageable. In fact, if you have a good plan for handling the move and keep on schedule, you may actually find it fun to get out of your old house and into your new one. Here are a few tips to make moving a lot less stressful.
1. Lighten Up
Consider getting rid of items that you don’t need. A very easy way to do this is to have a box for the things that you don’t need or want to take with you. When you run across such items while packing, toss them in the box. It not only lightens the load but also makes it a lot easier to move in, as you won’t have to find a place for items that you don’t use.
2. Don’t Procrastinate on Your Utilities
Call ahead to your utility companies and make sure that you’re set up to switch them over when you vacate the premises. Some utility companies are efficient and reliable and others are not so it is better to call early than to pay for utilities that you aren’t using. Double check that everything is ready to go a few days before the move and then check again on the day of the move.
3. Take Care of Your Mail
Make sure you let the post office know that your address is changing well in advance. The Post Office has a great system for doing this online. There’s no need to wait in line to get it done and it only take a few minutes to complete online. This is one of the easiest parts of the move to handle, but it can be one of the biggest hassles if left unattended until the last minute. Remember to update your address with any businesses from whom you receive mail, as well.
4. Get Plenty of Boxes
Get more boxes than you think you need. You can always give away, or recycle, the ones that you don’t use. If you don’t have enough boxes it is likely that you will over pack each box making them too heavy and unmanageable. There’s nothing better than light, easily lifted boxes to reduce the stress of moving. Another benefit of not overfilling each box is that it keeps your items safe. Items that are packed too densely can easily get damaged.
5. Hire Professionals
Professional help is always the easiest way to go with big moves. You’ll be amazed at how fast professional movers can get you out of an old house and into a new one. In addition to having the right tools for the job, they also tend to have workers who can lift heavy furniture without damaging it or themselves. Make sure you have everything ready to go for them when they show up and, if you want to show your appreciation, don’t be afraid to tip these hardworking people when the job is done.
